Yanks Abroad: End Of September

Fulham @ Stoke City 9/21/10, Fulham @ West Ham United, October 2, 2010

Deuce started and played the entire match, while Eddie Johnson made his way onto the pitch in the 57th minute and managed an attempt on goal.  Despite the play of the Americans, Fulham went home disappointed, 2-0.  Dempsey took four shots, one of which was on target. A week later, against West Ham United, Dempsey found the net in the 33rd minute and probably should have had Fulham up a man after getting more or less shanked in the face by Manuel da Costa, who obviously has the tax-evasion goods on referee Andre Mariner. Not only was da Costa not sent off- he wasn’t even booked.  Either way, Deuce’s goal was good enough for a draw and we can now confirm that Rob Green wakes up every morning and checks to see if Clint Dempsey is hiding in a dark corner somewhere. He also mutters “Daddy, there’s that man!” from time to time. Seek help, Rob. See Dempsey’s goal against West Ham here.

Hannover 96 v. Werder Breman 9/21/10

Steve Cherundolo played all 90 minutes in the 4-1 victory in front of the home crowd.  Hannover currently sits in third place in the Bundesliga.  Not surprisingly, the man with no “I” in his name, Steve Cherundolo, credits this to teamwork.

Aston Villa v. Blackburn Rovers 9/22/10

Brad Guzan got the start over Brad Friedel in the Carling Cup match at Villa Park.  Guzan made 8 saves in the 3-1 victory.  I’m disappointed that these two are still on the same side, they are both EPL quality.  Who ya got in a Brad v. Brad bare knuckle fistfight?  I guess I’ll go Friedel with the old man strength.

St Etienne v. Nice 9/22/10

Carlos Bocanegra and the Greens picked up a 2-0 win in the Coupe de la Ligue match.  As I mentioned last week, St Etienne is playing very well so far this season.  I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a Ligue 1 game televised, but I would love to see this team play.

Schalke 04 @ SC Freiburg 9/22/10

Jermaine Jones played all 90 minutes in the 2-1 victory.  According to the Associated Press, Jones may soon make his debut for the USMNT.  The victory marked the first win of the Bundesliga season for last year’s runner up.

Borussia M’gladbach v. St. Pauli 9/22/10

MB90 played all 90 for the home side as they dropped another result, this time 2-1.  Whenever I hear the words St. Pauli, my mind immediately fills with images of enormous beer steins and a buxom blonde. I like that image.

Montrachet Frankfurt @ Bayer Leverkusen 9/22/10

Ricardo Clark came on in the 76th minute, but his presence alone was not enough and Frankfurt dropped this one 2-1.  Red-cardo did not appear in Frankfurt’s second match of the week.

Everton @ Fulham 9/25/10

In a match that featured 3 of our beloved Yanks abroad at Craven Cottage, the teams fought to a 0-0 draw. Tim Howard made a pair of saves and kept a clean sheet, thereby holding up his end of the bargain for the pathetic Toffees. Clint Dempsey ran the full 90 and Eddie Johnson came on in the 55th minute.  Howard did not appear in Everton’s Carling Cup match last week.

St Etienne @ Lyon 9/25/10

Carlos Bocanegra played the full 90 minutes as St. Etienne kept the hot streak alive with the 1-0 victory on the road.  Boca  believes their success is rooted in teamwork and the willingness of everyone to work hard and help on the defensive end.

Borussia M’gladbach @ Schalke 04 9/25/10

Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones faced off last Saturday evening and played to a 2-2 draw. MB90 put one in the net in the 43rd minute. The goal was MB90’s first of the Bundesliga season, Jones took a couple fouls and committed a pair.

Aston Villa @ Wolverhampton 9/26/10

Brad Friedel out dueled his American counterpart, Marcus Hahnemann in the 2-1 Villa win.  How does everyone feel about Brad Friedel?  I can’t stand him.  I’m not really sure why, just something about him bothers me.  Maybe not as much as Marcus Hahnemann and his soul patch bothers me, but soul patches aside…I’m not a Friedel fan.  However, both Americans played well and made 6 saves apiece for their respective sides.

Bolton v Man. U. 9/26/10

After not appearing in the Carling Cup match earlier in the week, Stu Holden, who takes his assessment from his mum, played all 90 minutes for Bolton in the 2-2 draw.  Bolton took an early lead and also led 2-1 until Michael Owen scored the equalizer just 3 minutes after coming on. Holden’s younger brother, Euan Holden, is getting a run with Crewe Alexandria, an English club in Chesire.

Rangers @ Aberdeen 9/26/10

After not appearing in the CIS Insurance Cup earlier in the week, the well rested Maurice Edu entered the match in the 74th minute in the 3-2 victory.  Edu came on for Steven Davis, who may miss the upcoming Champions League match.  As far as I’m concerned, that just means more clock for Mo…and I’m cool with that.

Hannover 96 @ Kaiserslautern 9/26/10

Steve Cherundolo played the entire match in the 1-0 loss on the road. DaMarcus Beasley failed to appear for the second consecutive game.  He has to be concerned that his move from Ibrox is not resulting in anymore playing time.

Its late and I’m tired, but the Reds clinched the playoffs last week and I was there.  Memories are more important than sleep.
