Editors Note: We promised a “Yanks Abroad” type segment that wouldn’t inundate you with games in the Scandinavian third division, and we’re delivering here.
Our “Americans Overseas” segment will focus on US players who have either received a senior national team call-up or who we believe will receive one in the near or immediate future.
If you want real time updates on US Players Abroad, you can also feel free to follow Joe at @TwelfthYank for plenty of weekend updates.
Without further Freddy Adu— here’s an update on Americans who are, as Jurgen Klinsmann might say, “challenging themselves at the highest level” abroad.
FRIDAY
Fabian Johnson/Gladbach vs. Freiburg: In 18, DNP in 3-1 L. After a hot start to the season, Johnson is finding minutes hard to come by. Mostly that’s due to this new, hot French dude name Plea or something…
Terrence Boyd/Darmstadt vs. Greuther Furth: 92’ appearance in 2-0 W, so just a few scraps for minutes…seems to be a theme this year, as yet again Boyd is finding it hard to get on the field.
McKinze Gaines/Darmstadt vs. Greuther Furth: In 18, DNP in 2-0 W. At least he’s in the match day squad? Fourth time he’s made it this season.
Julian Green/Greuther Furth vs. Darmstadt: Started, played full 90’ at the number ten slot in 0-2 L. They were not supposed to lose this one…
Meanwhile, in jolly old England…
Geoff Cameron/QPR vs. Aston Villa: Started, played 69’ in 1-0 W. He has to be happy with his increasing amount of minutes and, funny enough, since he has started regularly QPR have turned around their losing ways…
SATURDAY
Argentina
Joel Sonora/Talleres Cordoba vs. San Martin: Entered in the 79’ to see out a 0-0 draw way down in Argentina.
Austria
Josh Gatt/Altach v. Mattersburg: Started, played 70’ in 1-1 draw. Gatt has done quite well to find a regular starting spot in Austria, especially considering his injury woes continue to bite at his heels. No goals yet, but he’s playing an important role at Altach.
Belgium
Brendan Hines-Ike/Kortrijk v. Cercle Brugge: In the 18, DNP. Bit of a shock really…he’s been a staple starter in the side all season.
Ethan Horvath/Club Brugge v. St. Truiden: As seems to be custom with him, in the 18 but DNP. But he “practices well” according to his manager.
Denmark
Jonathan Amon/Nordsjaelland v. Horsens: Started, played 71’ in 3-3 draw. Involved and played well, but didn’t have a direct goal related impact in a total shootout.
England…
Tim Ream/Fulham vs. Bournemouth: Started, played 90’ in 0-3 L. Good: he’s logging solid minutes. Bad: Fulham are struggling and Ream and the defense are a huge reason why.
DeAndre Yedlin/Newcastle v. Southampton: Started, played 90’ in 0-0 D. Repeat Tim Ream status, but Newcastle are worse even if the defense is a little better.
Eric Lichaj/Hull City v. Bolton: Started, played 90’. A much, much needed 1-0 W for the Tigers. He keeps chugging along, logging minutes, impacting winning and receiving national team calls.
Antonee Robinson/Wigan v. Sheffield United: Started, played 90’ for a Wigan side who are inconsistent this season.
Cameron Carter-Vickers/Swansea v. Reading: Entered in the 78’ in a 2-0 W. Clawing for those minutes – and seems to be winning a fair few, which is a good change from prior years.
France
Matt Miazga/Nantes v. Amiens: Not in the 18. Alarm bells ringing yet? Reports surfaced over the weekend that he might be headed back to Chelsea after disagreements with the new manager. Ligue 1 is certainly testing him…
Germany
Christian Pulisic/Dortmund v. Hertha Berlin: Entered in the 72’ after likely being rotated from Champions League minutes earlier in the week. Didn’t have much weight on the game in 2-2 D. Even as Sancho becomes indispensable, Pulisic starts Champions League games. Favre seems committed to him and save an off day occasionally, his form is good.
Alfredo Morales/Fortuna Dusseldorf v. Wolfsburg: Started, played 78’ in 0-3 L. He’s played every game this season for a struggling side.
John Brooks/Wolfsburg v. Fortuna Dusseldorf: Started, played 90’. Solid outing. Continues to be healthy and has had a wonderful autumn.
Bobby Wood/Hannover 96 v. Augsburg: Started, played 90’ in 1-2 L. Can someone get him the ball? He’s scored when he’s had service, which is more often than before he arrived in Hannover but not enough.
Andrew Wooten/Sandhausen v. Paderborn: Started, played 90’ and scored TWICE, with the final goal rescuing a point away from home in 3-3 D so, what didn’t he do?! MNT Overseas Player of the Week!!!

Mexico
Ventura Alvarado/Necaxa v. Atlas: Remember him? Started, played 90’ in 2-2 D.
Omar Gonzalez/Atlas v. Necaxa: Started, played 90’ in 2-2 D. Did not have an own goal. (Yeah we went there.)
Holland
Erik Palmer-Brown/NAC Breda v. ADO Den Haag: In the 18, DNP. Breda have a nasty, leaky defense…maybe give EPB a try?
Spain
Shaq Moore/Reus Deportiu v. Dep. La Coruna: In 18, DNP in 0-2 L. Bit disappointing really…after what seemed like winning his spot, he has not played for the last two weeks.
Israel
Jon Bornstein, Maccabi Netanya v. H.Beer-Shiva: Not in the 18. Bornstein has played sparingly for the storied Israeli club since departing Liga MX this summer. Still, the 33 year-old hasn’t ruled out managing and he’s gaining valuable experience in yet another professional league as he waits on that endeavor.
SUNDAY
Belgium
Kenny Saief/Anderlecht v. Eupen: Entered at HT and snagged an assist but it wasn’t enough to keep RSCA from losing 1-2.
Germany
Weston McKennie/Schalke v. RB Leipzig: Started, played 90’. Pretty dull affair to be honest. 0-0 D. Was a substitute in Champions League action earlier in the week which is an interesting development.
Mexico
William Yarbrough/Club Leon v. Puebla: Started, played 90’ but had a lot of work to do in a 0-4 L…er, beating.
MONDAY
Sweden
Romain Gall/Malmo FF v. AIK: In the 18 for the biggest game in the Allsvenskan over the weekend, but did not play. In fact, his last minutes were on 10/7, when he scored a goal. Since then, Malmo have won once and drawn twice so…huh?
